VP Marketing and Business Development

Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing Division seeks an innovative leader to serve as Vice President, Marketing and Business Development. This position is chief marketing executive for Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing division and responsible for supporting audience engagement and revenue growth goals. The VP, Marketing & Business Development will work closely with SVP, Strategy & Development to develop and execute new customer driven approaches to increase market share of local controllable spending.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the division’s strategic planning function. He/she must be able to synthesize research and use the input to develop the right strategic marketing, digital strategies and advertising initiatives for the benefit USCP’s 80+ local media organizations in a competitive business environment. He/she will work closely with the division’s Client Solutions groups and be responsible for its revenue performance.  The VP will be responsible for building a team and collaborating with colleagues in key areas including world class sales and marketing transformation, data analytics and research, marketing communication, digital development, marketing services and strategic planning.  The position reports to the Sr. Vice President Strategy and Development.


Provide the vision and priorities for direct reports, and oversee the development and implementation of objectives, strategies, and tactics in the areas of marketing and business development.

Collaborate with USCP colleagues to support world-class sales transformation within U.S. Community Publishing’s 80+ properties with a strong focus on the largest revenue markets.

Collaborate with Gannett’s Digital Division on product development, revenue generation business opportunities, new partnerships and field implementation of new initiatives.

Lead USCP’s B2B efforts, including development of marketing campaigns and other direct marketing tactics aimed at engaging customers. Oversee development, communication and training of reports and tools for field access to market intelligence and information.

Provide consultation to individual media properties in key marketing and business development areas and works with underperforming sites to develop strategies and improve performance.

Oversee the planning, creation and execution of all elements of internal communication plan; e.g. quarterly newsletter, email updates to field, Board of Director presentations, monthly reports, etc.

Oversee market analytics and market potential activity including market performance base lining; territory optimization and market/account potential; prospect identification and scoring; assessment of external research database information; design, execution and assessment of proprietary primary research.

Oversee the lead generation, direct marketing and sales support strategies of CRM/sales force automation.

15 plus years of experience in a business-to-business revenue generation environment, preferably within a world-class marketing and sales organization.  Minimum of 10 years of experience in B2B marketing and/or business development experience. Additional experience in sales and/or sales management is preferable.

VP or director level experience with track record in building and managing a highly effective team.

Demonstrated responsibility and accountability for delivering significant revenue in a competitive business-to-business environment.

Entrepreneurial orientation – willing to “roll up sleeves."  Strong plus:  experience in managing in and working across a large, multi-unit organization, with demonstrated ability to lead and manage in a matrix environment.

Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree a plus.

Ability to build and lead a B2B sales organization and the ability to gain and maintain a deep understanding of the markets and associated trends.
