Marketing Strategist

The Democrat and Chronicle Media Group seeks a Marketing Strategist to work with specific accounts to increase year-over-year revenue from identified Gannett Client Solutions (GCS) Pipeline opportunities to meet defined budgeted goals. These accounts may be existing accounts where relationships are established and revenue is currently being generated, or new business prospects.  Acts as a consultant to the VP/Sales, sales managers and sales representatives to prioritize opportunities by revenue, segment, category and accounting utilizing all available research and data sources, plus direct input from clients and prospects (“Needs Assessment.")

 The Marketing Strategist is considered a key member of both the Advertising and Gannett Client Solutions teams, and serves as the GCS primary contact at the local property for all projects in the GCS Pipeline. The Marketing Strategist will work closely with the advertising team to identify clients and prospects to be entered into the GCS Pipeline, and managing that Pipeline on a regular basis.

The Marketing Strategist may achieve their objectives in any number of ways, including:

a.)    Leveraging the expanded resources of the regional Gannett Client Solutions Group to develop larger scale, custom, integrated marketing and advertising programs that meet a specific, significant, client need (e.g. ad campaigns, mobile applications, digital marketing strategy and execution, brand advertising, etc.)

b.)    Providing clients added-value services to assist them in meeting their marketing objectives (e.g. Research, data analytics, creative services, promotions, etc.)

c.)     Applying the many ancillary products and services available through the local property’s Marketing group, including digital media campaigns, Gannett Local, Yahoo!, Deal Chicken, ShopLocal, etc.

Duties include: 

Client Needs Assessment:  Collaborates with advertising reps and uses all available research tools to gain knowledge and understanding of our customer’s business, market and competition. Develops relationships with assigned accounts to directly assess needs, identify opportunities to add value, understand client’s branding requirements and relationships with other marketing services providers, especially ad agencies.

Solutions Development:  Uses input gained from comprehensive Client Needs Assessment (above) to initiate development of a client solution that offers the best chance to close quickly (generate revenue), and/or will have the most meaningful impact on the client’s business in both the short and long term. Collaborates with, and coordinates the efforts of, GCS Creative Director and other team members to develop and apply internal resources to execute the solution as required. Follows established procedures, or creates new procedures where none exist. Execution may include writing Creative Brief documents, developing production timelines, budgeting and preparing client estimates.

Solutions Presentations:  Assists in creating and delivering custom client presentations of proposed solutions. Presentations may include other team members as needed, including advertising managers and reps, research analysts, art directors, and digital marketing strategists. Coordinates efforts with the advertising reps and managers to follow-up as needed to obtain client feedback and close the sale.

GCS Pipeline Management:  Deliberates with advertising to identify and prioritize best prospects for inclusion in the Gannett Client Solution Pipeline. Criteria include revenue potential, degree of need/complexity of solution, and opportunity to deliver the solution across multiple Gannett markets. Serves as project manager on all clients in the GCS Pipeline; keeps all internal and external clients apprised of project status; meets weekly with advertising reps, managers, and/or VP/Sales to discuss Pipeline accounts and update reports as needed.

Sales Support:  Regularly analyzes all available data to help advertising team identify opportunities to increase market share of local property’s products and services. Assists in preparing client proposals and presentations, and conducts presentations as needed.

Job Requirements

Bachelor Degree in business, marketing, communications or equivalent work-related experience and talent.

Minimum of 5-years marketing experience; advertising agency experience a plus.

Experience working with integrated marketing teams.

Excellent organizational skills

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to promote and sell concepts to clients

Expert conceptual/strategic ability, writing and oral communications skills

Clear understanding of effective online and offline communications.

Proven, sophisticated presentation and proposal development skills.

Strong working understanding of the creative development process.

Flexible hours required during peak periods or deadline situations. 

Some travel may be required for training at Corporate or at other Gannett and/or vendor sites.
