Instagram Launches Profile Pages

As of early November, the Facebook-owned app has broadened its horizons from mobile to the web, solidifying its place in your clients’ social media strategies. Previously, the app only had a landing page on the web for potential users to download the app to their cell phones, but now the app has expanded to include web-based profile pages.

We at AtF have advocated for Instagram, a mobile photo-sharing app, as a great business-marketing tool. As of early November, the Facebook-owned app has broadened its horizons from mobile to the web, solidifying its place in your clients’ social media strategies. Previously, the app only had a landing page on the web for potential users to download the app to their cell phones, but now the app has expanded to include web-based profile pages.

Many Instagram users have complained that some of the app’s navigation would be easier to do on a web-based portal, and this is undoubtedly the app’s answer to those concerns. However, as noted by Ragan’s PR Daily’s article, “Instagram Debuts Profile Pages for the Web,” Instagram still relies on its mobile function, as users must use the app on their phones to upload pictures that will then appear on their online profile.

The new profile pages do allow for the functions of many of the other social media giants, including liking and commenting on photos as well as adding fellow users.

In terms of appearance, some have noted the markedly similar look of the new Instagram profile pages to that of Facebook. Instagram released a statement when they debuted the pages and did not deny the similarity, saying that Facebook has changed the game when it comes to online profiles and it is following in those footsteps.

The statement went on to describe the appearance of the new profiles; “Your web profile features a selection of your recently shared photographs just above your profile photo and bio, giving others a snapshot of the photos you share on Instagram.”

If you already have an Instagram account, go ahead and take a look at your profile. Just include your username in the URL, www.instagram.com/username.

If you are new to Instagram and all it offers your business, you have a few options. First, just check out some of the major brands that have already started to use the new profile pages, like Nike, MTV and Burberry. Also, Instagram publishes a blog geared specifically to the needs of users using the app for business purposes.
